3 in custody after shooting wounds at Columbia Mall 12

COLUMBIA, SC (WCSC/WIS) – The Columbia Police Department confirmed Saturday afternoon that 12 people were injured in a shooting at the Columbiana Center.

Chief Skip Holbrook says of those 12 people, 10 were shot and two were injured trying to flee the scene.

All those who were shot in the incident went to area hospitals. Two of the 10 people shot are in critical condition, Holbrook said. The victims are between 15 and 73 years old.

In a Facebook post, Prisma Health, a healthcare provider in the Midlands, said of the 11 patients they have seen, nine have been treated and discharged, and two patients have been admitted.

Three people were arrested after the incident, according to investigators. Police say there aren’t necessarily any suspects, but that could change as the investigation continues.

At least one person fired a weapon at the mall, according to the preliminary investigation. Three people were seen at the mall on Saturday with a gun, Holbrook said.

“We don’t think it was random, and I think that’s very important in situations like this,” Holbrook said. “We believe that the individuals who were armed knew each other and that there was a type of conflict that culminated in the shooting. This was not a situation where a random person showed up at a mall to discharge a firearm and injure people.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Columbia Police Bureau of Criminal Investigations at 803-545-3525.

No deaths have been reported.

In response to the shooting, Columbiana Center released this statement.

Today’s isolated and senseless act of violence is extremely heartbreaking and our hearts go out to all those affected. We are grateful for the quick response and continued support from our security team and law enforcement partners.

Mayor of Colombia Daniel Rickenmann also released a statement.

Our community is saddened by this senseless shooting and the pain it caused to innocent bystanders. Our goal is to get them treatment now and support the multiple law enforcement agencies working together to bring these criminals to justice.

Initial Response

Police initially reported the incident at 2:28 p.m. at Columbiana Center in the Irmo area, saying at the time it was unclear if anyone was injured.

Just 16 minutes later, police confirmed that there were injuries and that the injured were receiving medical treatment.

A reunification site for those whose loved ones are involved in the shooting is at the Fairfield Inn at 320 Columbiana Drive.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, Richland County Sheriff’s Office and Newberry County Sheriff’s Office are all at the scene.

These teams ensured that the mall had been ‘cleaned up’. Police are telling anyone still inside to wait for officers to come as a protected escort.
