H Mart is already looking to expand into SF’s Oceanview Mall
The very popular Korean market with indoor restaurants, H Mart, is already expanding in San Francisco.
The New Jersey-based chain opened here in 2021, having opened two locations in San Jose. The H Mart in San Francisco is located in the Oceanview Village shopping center at the edge of Ingleside Heights on Alemany Boulevard off Interstate 280.
The Business Times reports that the chain plans to take over the adjacent space which was vacated when a 24 Hour Fitness closed two years ago. The mall’s construction and development manager, Michael Mossman, said the store will have “completely new construction” by the time it completes its expansion. The additional space will take the SF location from 47,000 square feet to nearly 75,000 square feet.
H Mart sells hard-to-find Asian snacks and ingredients and includes a food court. The San Francisco location’s food court offers a variety of popular Korean restaurants with dishes that will transport you across the Pacific. Daeho Kalbijjim & Beef Soup serves traditional Korean stews and braised beef ribs that can be customized with sauces, spices and add-ons. Left Wing Bar, specializing in spicy Korean fried chicken and beer, has nearly 400 locations across South Korea, and now has one in San Francisco’s H Mart. Paris Baguette, another Korean favorite, is also at the store and describes itself as a “neighborhood bakery cafe” that offers cakes and other goodies.
Mossman told the Business Times he was “delighted to see H Mart offering a wider selection”, saying the store “continues to be a popular destination”.
The move to 24 Hour Fitness will increase the size of the space by more than 50%, raising total H Mart store square footage from 47,000 to 74,168, reports SFGate. This includes a ground floor, basements and additional parking.
It is not only the size of the store that is growing, it is also its notoriety. Michelle Zauner, singer and songwriter of alternative pop band Japanese Breakfast, posted a New York article that turned into a comprehensive memoir titled Crying in H Martand that hit the New York Times bestseller list and stayed there for 40 weeks.
H Mart says its mission is to offer top quality products.
âIf that means we have to source our fish from Fulton Fish Market, we do,â he added. the store’s website says. “If that means we have to negotiate directly with the farmers, that’s it. If that means we have to go out of our way and bend over backwards to get the best price, that’s just not a problem. So , when it comes time to make that “magical” meal…we think your ingredients better be better than the best.”
Mossman did not offer a timeline for new construction or information on renovation plan approvals.
