The Spartan Hall of Fame cafe will become a shopping center

EAST LANSING, Mich. — The Spartan Hall of Fame Cafe was known for its great food and fond memories, but soon the building will be just a memory.

“It was just such a shock because we were going there for dinner one night and it was like the night was closed,” said Lynn Atkins, who has frequented the Spartan Cafe Hall of Fame Cafe for ten years. She says she could talk endlessly about her memories there.

“The kids loved going there because half the time they were meeting one of the MSU Sports teams in the back room,” she recalled.

The restaurant with white pillars, green trim and Spartan flags on the roof will be transformed into a shopping town by new owner Alrig USA.

“We plan to redevelop it as a shopping center,” said general manager Gabriel Schuchman.

He said the project would cost around $1 million.

“We have two national users approaching us to build two separate freestanding buildings on the property as part of the mall and we have submitted to the city for approval and I hope the city likes our plan,” Schuchman said.

Currently, a fast food restaurant and a medical retail business are interested in becoming tenants. Construction is expected to begin this summer and be completed early next year.
