VLC Media Player banned; VLC website and download link blocked in india

One of the most popular media player software and streaming media server VLC media player developed by VideoLAN project is no longer working in India. According to a report by MediaNama, VLC Media Player was blocked in India almost 2 months ago. Neither the company nor the Indian government revealed details of the ban.

Some reports suggest that VLC Media Player was blocked in the country because the platform was a Chinese-backed hacking group, Cicada, who used it for cyberattacks. Just a few months ago, security experts discovered that Cicada was using VLC Media Player to deploy a malware loader as part of a long campaign of cyberattacks.

As it was a soft ban, neither the company nor the Indian government officially announced the ban on the media platform. Some Twitter users are still learning about platform restrictions. One of the Twitter users by the name of Gagandeep Sapra tweeted a screenshot of VLC’s website which shows that “the website has been blocked as per the order of Ministry of Electronics and Technology. ‘information under the Computers Act 2000’.

Currently, VLC Media Player website and download link are blocked in the country. In simple terms, this means that no one in the country can access the platform for any job. This is apparently the case for users who have installed the software on their device. VLC Media Player is said to be blocked on all major ISPs including ACTFibernet, Jio, Vodafone-idea and others.

Recently, Indian government blocked hundreds of Chinese apps including PUBG Mobile, TikTok, Camscanner and many more. In fact, the Indian version of PUBG Mobile dubbed as BGMI has also been blocked in India and removed from Google Play Store and Apple App Store. The reason for blocking these apps is that the government feared that these platforms would send user data to China. Notably, VLC Media Player is not supported by any Chinese company. It is developed by VideoLAN, a company based in Paris.
